To choose your soldering iron, you want to avoid two kinds of soldering irons. You want to stay away from a soldering gun, because they are good for mostly high temperature soldering, not much else; they can also burn a PCB board if you are soldering one of those. You also want to stay away from a direct plug-in soldering iron. The reason not to use this is that you cannot control the temperature of the iron, again making it difficult not to burn the PCB. The Soldering iron that you want to get is one that plugs into the wall and has a temperature control, maybe even a sponge and probably a docking station.
