The black death was thought to have been originally introduced to most of Europe through some trading ships that arrived on the coast of Rome. The boat was immediately quarantined, but it was too late. The deadly virus spread rapidly across the continent, taking with it the lives of thousands. The black death’s symptoms included normal cold symptoms, boils on the skin, and many more smaller symptoms. It was highly contagious, passing if somebody was within 10 or so feet of each other. The doctors of the time had no good way to treat it as they did not know much about the germ theory and how the Black Death was spread. Rats and other small animals also carried the plague. The Black Death killed over one-fourth of the European population, drastically reducing the workforce, and therefore the economic value.
Protected: What Vegetables Are Good For
Raw vs Cooked Foods
Some foods are healthier raw than cooked, while some foods are healthier cooked than raw. Today I’m going to cover some of each.
Examples of foods that are healthier raw include, broccoli, onions, garlic, and cabbage. Some examples of foods that are better cooked include aspagross, mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, and most meats.
The reason to cook certain foods is to either remove toxins or unwanted chemicals, or to make the good chemicals more exposed. For example, meat needs to be cooked to prevent food poisoning. Meanwhile, garlic looses much of its nutritional value when cooked.
Science 7 #71: How to Tell If You Are Drinking Enough Water
Drinking water is an essential activity in our daily lives, as water is one of the most necessary requirements for survival. In short, you will die if you go without water for a length of time. But how can you tell how much water you need? In this short article I’m going to answer that exact question.
In order to calculate how much water you need to be drinking daily, divide your weight in lbs by 2, and that is how much water in fl oz you need to drink. So a 180 lb person would need to drink 90 fl oz of water, and since 8 fl oz is equal to one cup, than that would be 11 1/4 cups of water. One way to tell if you are getting enough water is the color of your urine. If it is clear, you are getting enough water. If it is yellow, than you have mild dehydration. If it is orange or brown, you have severe dehydration and need to drink a lot more water.
History 7 *wrong topic*: The Renaissance
The Renaissance was a revival of the arts (literature, painting, sculpting, etc) and was the time of some of the most famous artists and poets in all of history. Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Petrarch are a few. The Renaissance was also the beginning of many new styles of painting and poetry. It also emulated the styles of the Romans or Greeks occasionally.
The Renaissance was based on humanism, which basically taught to focus on what man could do without God. This was such a new idea, but it caused a surge in the interest in the arts because this was something man could do without God. Ironically, many of the paintings were based off of scenes from the bible and of God and of Christianity’s most famous figures.
In short, the Renaissance brought back the love of the arts that was experienced during the age of the Romans, and left us with some of the most impressive works of art to this day.
Science 7 #70: Stress
Stress occurs when something unexpected and/or harmful that could require quick action takes place. The brain’s reaction is to prime your body for quick movement and in doing so releases a chemical called cortisol. Chronic Stress occurs when you are constantly being stressed for a long period of time, like when you are under a lot of pressure for something like school assignments (which I currently am right now). Chronic Stress can make concentration, focus, decision making, and comprehension hindered. These symptoms can even cause more stress, for example, not being able to focus on an assignment can cause more stress to develop from not being able to complete said assignment. So one wants to minimize stress as much as possible to avoid all these symptoms.
Chronic stress, quite simply, causes a lot of problems, and so you want to avoid it as much as you can. The frustrating part is, a little bit of stress can quickly snowball, because not being able to focus will cause you to fail assignments and then you are more stressed because you failed said assignments. Stress can be good though, as long as it is short term stress, and not chronic stress, because it gives you a boost of energy to get you out of a bad situation.
English 7 #70: Genres
A genre is a writing style that depicts a certain mood of writing in order to make the reader think and feel about the story in a certain way.
Here are some examples of genres: Fantasy, Comedy, Science Fiction, and Mythology. That’s just to name a few.
Genres inflict certain emotions on the reader in regards to a piece of literature and normally are what the entire plot of the story is based on. For example, a comedy is based off of making people laugh; a science fiction work of literature has the plot based entirely off of the science fiction genre.
Here are some examples of my favorite books and their genres. The entirety of the Tom Swift series is in the action-adventure genre, although a lot of it could be categorized as science fiction as well. I used to really like the Boxcar Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warner, and it was a mystery-adventure genre. The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson is also a really good book series. It is a fantasy-adventure genre, taking place in a world that is fantasy. One of my favorite books is Tom Sawyer, and its genre is simply the adventure genre. As you can see, I really like the adventure genre. I’m also a bit of a fan of superhero fiction books, but I’m not loyal to a particular book or franchise in that genre. I don’t typically stick to a certain hero’s series. One series I enjoy in the superhero fiction genre is Dog Man by Dav Pilkey.
In short, genres are one of the main tiers for categorizing literature. They are subsets of prose, drama, and poetry, and are usually decided before you begin writing a piece of literature.
History 7 #65 William Wallace
William Wallace was a Scottish hero who led the Scottish rebellion against England, and while he failed, he inspired Robert the Bruce to attempt again and he succeed in winning the freedom of the Scots.
William Wallace was born in Elderslie and grew up under the English rule. He was the one person who would not resist at all, fighting any soldiers who wanted to take his knife or any article off of his body. William raised a rebellion to fight the English and succeeded for a time, but the English drove him back from his stronghold, Stirling Castle. Wallace went back to his quieter station in life as opposed to being a commander in battle, but he never gave up his fight for freedom, raising a few small rebellions. He finally was captured and put to death in a hideous way which I am not going to dwell on here.
William Wallace greatly influenced Robert the Bruce, who, through a sires of battles, won Scottish freedom from the English.
English Lesson #65: If I was Robinson Crusoe
If I was stranded on an island like Robinson Crusoe and I had two items to have, they would be a 3-in-one solar panel, battery charger, and lantern. Of course it comes with batteries. The other item would be a taser, for then I could kill small game, and stun larger game that I could then slay with a melee weapon.
The batteries would be very important to charge the taser, and the charger could also provide light, which would be of great way to light up any permanent abode indoors until I could learn how to make candles or some other form of light.
Using the taser, I could probably gain a food source until I could grow and cook my own food. I could go hunting and kill any small birds or other meats which I could then cook on a campfire.
Marco Polo: History Lesson 60
Marco Polo was one of the most famous travelers in history, being the first man to record his travels throughout China and the eastern countries. His book about the topic, The Travels of Marco Polo greatly influenced other great travelers, such as Christopher Columbus, who had a copy of Marco’s book on his voyage to America.
Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy, in 1254 A.D. His father and uncle had been away in china for 15 years since Marco was born, so he was 15 when he met his father. Marco’s father and uncle had met Kublai Khan and had been his gusts, so when they returned to Europe on a quest for him, they brought Marco back to China with them.
Marco recorded everything about his travels, not just where he went, but also what he saw and experienced, about the customs of the tribes he saw. He also wrote about his long stay in china and his position in the court of the Khan and all his trips as his ambassador.
Marco Polo influenced the famous sailor Christopher Columbus to sail the west Atlantic to reach India, however he instead discovered America, which was just as good (if not better) than locating a route to India.
