Today, I’m going to tell about the crowns of the Pharaohs. All images from this article are from Wikipedia.com.
The first crown was supposed to look like this:
Atef
The Atef crown is the white crown of upper Egypt with ostrich feathers on the front and back. This was worn by Orisis. I’m not quite sure when he lived, probably in the pre-dynastic periods. The Deshret was the crown of lower Egypt before it was united by Pharaoh Menes. Probably also from pre-dynastic periods. It is a curve up to a point, with a curl in the front. The little hole at the bottom is an ear hole.
The Headjet was worn by Upper Egypt in this same time period. It is like a stretched out dome with another on top.
The Pschent was the double crown worn by Pharaoh Menes, the Ptolemaic Dynasty, and others. It combines the crown of lower Egypt and upper Egypt.
Here is an image of Ptolemy VI wearing the Egyptian Crown. Please note that Ptolemy was not Egyptian.
This Khepresh is the new kingdom crown. It would probably have been worn during battle or at special ceremonies.
Here is an image of a statue of Tutankahmun wearing this crown:
There is also the Nemes, a typical headdress.
So that’s it! If I missed any, I’m sorry. Thanks for reading!
Today, I’m going to tell you about my house. When you pull in the driveway, there is an automatic gate, and once you go through that, you are in our backyard. We also have a small front yard, but don’t use it much. Our driveway is gravel. On your right is a parking area, and another one in front. Directly in front of you is a treeline separating the front of the yard from the back. In front of you on your right, there is a path going out farther back. The blue house with white trim is on your left, along with a playground and the garage. Getting out of the car and walking toward the Garage, there would be a path on your right that goes to the soccer field and chicken run. Going along that path, you have the lean-to, shed, and our other storage space on your left. On the right are tall grasses and an old greenhouse. The path goes right now and in front of you is the chicken run. Turn right and the path branches. One branch goes straight, and the other turns slightly left. There is a Wisteria plant at the fork. Go along the left path, and you are at the soccer field. Go along the right and you reach that other path that started on your right looking out from the driveway. Keep going straight and it goes around a big maple tree in center of our yard. Turn left and you go to the soccer field. Here is a map:
My Drawing of our yard
Going through the backdoor of the house, you enter the kitchen. On the right is the table. On the left is the cooking area. Directly in front is the arch doorway into the living room. In the living room, there is a couch on the right facing the same way as you, and a coffee table in front of it. Directly in front is the back of my brother’s shelves and in front of that is his desk. On the left is a door going to the basement, and a door going to our bedroom. On the right is a couch facing left.
Going down the basement stairs, you reach the basement. The basement is really one big room with a pantry in the middle. That divides it into four quadrants. You come down into the freezer quadrant. There are two freezers in this area. Go forward and you reach the laundry quadrant. There is a washing machine a drier, and a freezer. Turn right and you reach the maker’s space. There is a table and a few workbenches. There are also to computers; one is for 3D printing, the other for gaming. Below, built in to one of the workbenches, is a 3D printer cabinet, with a 3D printer inside. On the right is the fish tank, where we keep a few fish. Turn right and you walk into the unused quadrant. We might make it into a Man-cave someday. Turn right and you’re back at the freezer quadrant.
Going back up the stairs to the living room and facing the same direction you were earlier, go forward and to the right a little, and you reach the front room. It contains a craft/games cabinet, the treadmill, the front door, and my desk. It also has my other brother’s desk, and Dad’s desk and file cabinet. Walking forward and turning left, you reach mom and dad’s room. It pretty much consists of two dressers, mom’s desk, the laundry hamper, a closet, and the bed. Turning left again, you go through the bathroom. On the left is the sink and mirror. On the right is the toilet and tub. Going on straight, you reach our bedroom. On the right are three bunk beds, mine being the top. On the left is my dresser. In front of you is our laundry hamper. In front and slightly to the left is our bookshelves. In the front on the left is a door into the living room. If you go forward, turn right, and turn left, you get to the attic door.
The attic is nothing to speak of, just one big unfinished room full of stuff. But maybe one day it will be a living space.
So that is a tour of our house and yard! Thanks for reading!
Please Note: My assignment was to write about something I did this summer, but Mom and I decided that I would write about fun things I look forward to this fall instead.
In the Fall, there are some things I really enjoy, like picking apples. In this essay, I’m going to share my favorite things in the fall.
I really enjoy making pies for our family get-togethers. I always make a pumpkin pie and an apple pie.
I enjoy Thanksgiving because I like the food, seeing my relatives, and cooking. I also like making Carmel apples and going to the orchard to pick apples. I also like getting Christmas gifts together early. Believe it or not, I like starting school too.
The book starts out at Peter’s birthday, when he receives a toy railway engine. His engine gets blown up, and as the children’s father sees the about getting the engine fixed, he is called away on business. Suddenly, the children have to move, coming by railway to a station not far from their new house, called three chimneys. They go to their house and spend the first few days getting settled in. A couple of days later is a cold rainy day, but mother says they can’t light a fire, so Peter takes some coal from the station, calling it “mining” as he took it from the center of the pile. The station master scolded him for it, but they eventually made it up and became good friends. After this they also made the acquaintance of Perks, the porter. There is one man who is always on the train, and they wave to him each morning as the train comes by. They end up asking him for help when their mother gets sick and they can’t afford the things she needs. Then, Roberta, or Bobbie, Peter’s older sister, decides to see if an engineer can get Peter’s train fixed. She succeeds, and after that, they meet a gentleman who speaks French and they learn that he is an escaped Russian prisoner, and is looking for his family. After getting some new from the Old Gentleman’s Russian friends, he finds them. Before the Russian Gentleman leaves, they go to the railroad cutting to get him some flowers, but as they are there, a landslide ‘happens’ blocking off the rail. A train is coming, and they are able to save it by making flags and waving them. Not long after this, Peter decides to go fishing in a near by canal, but a man on a barge stops him. After that, the barge gets set on fire, and they are able to rescue a dog and a baby. After that, they bring gifts from people around town to Perks for his birthday. In the next chapter, Roberta learns the secret of why their father disappeared by looking at some newspapers Perks gave Peter to read after he hurt his foot. In the next three chapters, Roberta, Peter, and Phyllis find a boy in the railroad tunnel and take him home. His father turns out to be the Old Gentleman. The Old Gentleman is able to help find their father (somehow) and Roberta goes to the station and is able to meet him.
I think the ancient Greeks was an interesting civilization, particularly the Minoans. They had many structures and large palaces. I think the Greeks and Minoans had a cool civilization.
The Minoans had large palaces, one that was supposed to have at least 100 rooms. The Greeks and the Minoans are also famous for the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. The Minoans live on the island of Crete and the Balkan Islands, but there were also other people on mainland Greece.
I think the ancient Greeks were the most interesting thing we studied this week. They had great buildings and legends. I think the Greeks were a cool civilization.
My rock is basalt. I found it in my yard. I don’t remember when we got it, but it has been next to our porch for a while. It isn’t to be confused with the vesicular basalt, like what my teacher found. This is vesicular basalt:
Vesicular Basalt: My teacher, Daniel Dignan, Own work
When lava has lots of iron and magnesium in it, and it melts down to form an igneous rock, it might become basalt. When there are lots of air bubbles, it becomes known as vesicular basalt. The name of basalt come from a Latin word meaning “very hard stone”. Basalt is an 8 on the Moh’s hardness scale. Basalt comes in a number of different colors depending on how it is exposed to weather. Just after forming it is usually dark black or dark grey, but the surface can become yellow or brown after lots of exposure. The crystals that make up basalt are microscopic, so tiny you can’t see them. According to Wikipedia, over 90% of volcanic rock is basalt!
You can also find basalt on other planets, such as Venus and Mars. There is also lots of Basalt on the moon. If you have ever looked at the moon at through a telescope, you will see dark patches, and those patches are basalt!
In conclusion, I think basalt is a really cool, interesting rock. I never knew that all the black patches on the moon were really basalt! Basalt forms near lava, and is usually black or dark grey. It is common on other planets.
I live in Indiana, which is famous for limestone. I live in the capital of Indiana, Indianapolis. So I chose the Indiana state house, which is made of limestone.
Limestone is a sedimentary rock, meaning that it is a bunch of tiny pieces cemented together. Limestone is, in my opinion, a cross between really light brown and a really light grey. I don’t remember actually feeling limestone before, but from looking a pictures, I imagine it is kind of grainy. If the information I found is correct, than limestone is made out of calcite and dolomite.
“‘But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. He said, “All these people are united and speak the same language. That is why they can do all this. Come on! Let us go down and mix up their language. Then they will not be able to understand one other.’ So the LORD scattered them from there over the whole earth. And they stopped building the city.” -Genesis 11:5-8
Today my assignment is this: Where would I go if I was at the tower of Babel just after God confused the languages and found a group of people who could speak my language and we moved?
It depends on whether or not I can cross bodies of water. Assuming I can’t, I would probably go to modern-day Spain or Portugal, considering that I like warm weather, but not tropical. I would want a place to raise cattle and wheat and tomatoes and cucumbers and pigs. The Italian Peninsula might be an interesting place to settle.
If I could cross water, I might go to England or Ireland. I think the voyage across the Atlantic would be too much for me.
So, depending on my current abilities, I would go someplace in Europe.
I think that the railway children could end in a few different ways. I think the Russian Gentleman will have an important role in finding their father. I also think that the Old Gentleman could help. It seems like they must have some business acquaintances, and as father was taken away on business, they might know him that way. Anyhow, I think the book will somehow come to a conclusion of that sort. We know the Russian Gentleman can’t find his family, and that he lives with the railway children for a little while. We also know that the Old Gentleman is friendly towards the family, as he sent necessary items for mother when she was sick. Also, the railway company is likely grateful, for they saved a train from a wreck. They also are great friends with the porter and the station master. Roberta is especially friendly with the doctor, as she was out with him on her birthday. She also made the acquaintance of an engineer and conductor of a train in getting Peter’s toy engine fixed. Any one of these people could help in finding their father.
My opinion is that, somehow or other, everything will end right. Their father will be found, and they will be a happy family again. Everything will be right. Probably, some or all of their friends will accomplish this. Roberta will probably play a big part, as it seems she is the main character. Maybe father will travel on a train on some business through the station. Maybe he is held prisoner somewhere, and will be rescued and brought back. His case seems a lot like the Russian Gentleman’s. He is missing, and his wife and children don’t know where he is. A clue to the end of the railway children might be what happens to the Russian Gentleman.
